In the early 16th century, during the process of clearing land for cultivation, the Khmer people accidentally discovered a four-faced Buddha statue made of stone, facing in four directions. Recognizing this as a good omen, the locals built the pagoda in 1537 and brought the statue for worship. Notably, the statue is intricately carved with patterns that were not created by human hands.
Surrounding the statue, many mysterious stories have been passed down related to the process of bringing the statue to the pagoda. Although the statue is not very large, four strong young men could not lift it off the ground. This incident amazed everyone and led them to believe that the statue possessed a special spiritual power.
However, a solution was found after a strange dream of an elder in the village. According to the dream, it required 8 people (4 men and 4 women) to be vegetarians for 49 days to be able to carry the statue into the pagoda. The locals followed the instructions and eventually succeeded in bringing the four-faced Buddha statue into Four Faces Pagoda.
