The management scope of the park and the buffer zone encompasses many administrative units belonging to the two provinces of Dak Lak - Dak Nong, just about 38 km from Buon Ma Thuot.

Recognizing the special importance of the Yok Don forest system for nature conservation, in 1992, the Minister of Forestry signed Decision 301/TCLD (24/6/1992), officially establishing Yok Don National Park under the Ministry of Forestry, with an initial management scope of 58,200 ha of forest.
A decade later, to increase the protected area, the Prime Minister issued a decision to expand the park's boundaries to the current 115,545 ha. The living space around the national park currently has many ethnic minority communities still facing difficulties and lacking arable land. In this context, developing ecotourism with the direct participation of local people is considered a key solution.

Yok Don is the natural home of a rich community of animals with 196 species of birds, 67 species of mammals, nearly 50 species of reptiles, 15 species of amphibians, and hundreds of different insect species. Notably, it also preserves many rare animal species listed in the Red Book such as Asian elephants, bears, monkeys, and other wildlife with high biological value.
The vegetation in Yok Don National Park is equally diverse, recording 464 plant species, including 23 rare orchid species and many characteristic timber species of the dipterocarp forest. The most prominent is the characteristic dipterocarp forest (a type of dry forest where most trees completely shed their leaves in the dry season) creating a very unique landscape.
