Hang Duong Cemetery has witnessed the sacrifices of soldiers from both the French colonial and American imperialist periods. From 1862 to 1975, in the face of brutal torture and severe beatings in Con Dao prison, many political prisoners died. Previously, they were often buried in Hang Keo Cemetery, but that place no longer had enough space for additional graves, which is why Hang Duong was established.
The emergence of this cemetery reflects the brutality of the colonial empire, becoming the clearest historical witness to their crimes. Hang Duong covers an area of over 190,000 square meters with four sections: A, B, C, D. In addition to the "resting places with owners," there are still hundreds of thousands of nameless graves. As of May 10, 2012, this place was officially recognized as a National Special Monument, holding timeless historical value.

The solemn atmosphere of Hang Duong Cemetery also appears in the ceremonial yard area, located in the center and highlighted by exquisite sculptural statues, the most notable being the statue "Giving Clothes." This statue is over 9 meters tall, weighing a total of 25 tons, created based on the familiar story "In death, still undressing for each other" by two authors, Vu Van Hieu and the late General Secretary Le Duan.
After walking a short distance further, visitors will reach the memorial area. The work "Indomitable" by sculptor Dao Chau Hai also appears, showcasing a proud and towering figure against the sky.
"Indomitable" measures 22m in length and 3.2m in width, resembling a screen, depicting characters who are imprisoned. They support and help each other with the hope of passing through the rocky barriers, and although they are not relatives, these individuals are still connected by an invisible thread.
That is the thread of patriotism, the steadfast and indomitable spirit of the people of Con Dao in particular and Vietnam in general. The third large statue in this cemetery is named "Hope," created by sculptor Phan Gia Huong.
The statue depicts a female figure standing proudly against the windy sea sky, arms outstretched to release a bird into the sky. This is a symbolic scene, representing freedom and overflowing hope.
