Pa Khoang Lake is located in Muong Phang commune, Dien Bien province, about 20 km from the center of Dien Bien Phu city. The lake lies near the road connecting Dien Bien Phu city with Muong Phang, the site associated with the Command Headquarters of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign.
According to the database of Vietnam’s tourism sector, the lake sits at an altitude of over 1,000 m above sea level, with a water surface area of more than 600 ha and a capacity of nearly 40 million m³. The entire Pa Khoang tourism complex covers about 2,400 ha, including water surface, forest, farmland, and construction areas.
This location also creates a special advantage for Pa Khoang. From Dien Bien Phu city, visitors do not spend much time traveling yet can step into a completely different space, with mountains, forests, lakes, and ethnic minority villages.
The name Pa Khoang carries local cultural significance and is often explained in the Thai language as meaning “bamboo forest.” This name is linked to the vegetation that once grew abundantly around the lake. When arriving here, visitors can easily see that Pa Khoang’s nature is not only about the water surface but also a blend of forest, mountains, small islands, and villages.

This orientation continues to be reflected in the province’s tourism development plans. In 2026, Dien Bien identified the Dien Bien Phu – Pa Khoang and Muong Phang tourism areas as key zones for promotion and tourism marketing activities.

Notably, the 2026 planning also envisions the Pa Khoang Lake area developing into an urban, tourism, recreation, commercial service, accommodation, and landscape-linked tourism space. The adjusted planning zone around the lake covers nearly 283 hectares within a specific subdivision.
In September 2026, Dien Bien province also conducted on-site inspections for a proposed study of a resort housing, tourism, commercial service, and shopping center complex near Pa Khoang Lake. This is only information about a research proposal, which does not mean the project has been implemented or put into operation.
