The museum was started construction in October 2012 on an area of 22,000 m2. After 19 months of construction and completion, the museum officially opened to welcome visitors on May 5, 2014, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory.

Regarding the design concept of the building, the museum is inspired by the image of the conical hat that the Dien Bien soldiers used to wear.
