During the Nguyen Dynasty, Emperor Minh Mang ordered the construction of a fortress to control and protect the trade route across the eastern part of Da Nang Bay.

In September 1858, under the attack of Spanish and French colonists, Son Tra Peninsula became one of the first hotspots in the war of invasion of Vietnam. The military and people on the peninsula joined forces with the Nguyen court to fight against the invaders. When the US intervened in Vietnam, they turned this place into a solid fortress with Tien Sa Port, artillery bases, radar stations, and many other modern military equipment, demonstrating the strategic position of the area in protecting the country.
